Can AM Standards evolve to suport renewable, biologically derived materials?

BUTTERFLIES Project was represented at the ISO - International Organization for Standardization/TC 261 meeting in Singapore by project partner European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting (EWF).

During the meeting, Eurico Assunçao presented standardisation gaps and recommendations identified through the project. The contribution reflected the standardisation needs identified through the work carried out so far and brought them into direct discussion with the international AM standardisation community.

The recommendations shared during the meeting included:
• Harmonised classification, acceptance criteria and traceability for renewable AM feedstocks;
• Process qualification methods for Binder Jetting with renewable powders;
• Qualification principles for Two-Photon Polymerisation using bio-based resins;
• Expanded Design for Additive Manufacturing guidance covering biomimetic structures, moisture sensitivity and degradation during service.

Bringing these findings into international standardisation discussions is an important step for BUTTERFLIES Project, helping translate progress in biointelligent manufacturing into shared terminology, testing methods and qualification routes that can support the confident use of renewable materials.
